An Expert Workshop will be conducted on February 4, 2021 (Thursday) 3pm - 5pm. Three speakers will introduce the current conservation status and challenges of the animals, and answer participants’ questions during preparation of the project proposal. ​Interested parties can enrol the Expert Workshop on or before February 2, 2021

Introduction and Aims

Ocean Park is proud to present The Ocean Park STEAM Student Competition 2021. Secondary school students are invited to propose creative solutions to animal conservation issues. The Competition is aimed at encouraging students to apply the knowledge and skills they have acquired from STEAM-related disciplines in proposing their innovative animal conservation solutions.

Participants are going to provide their innovative ideas on different kinds of animal conservation works. In daily operation, conservationists encounter various problems, including but not limited to:
How to fix coral fragments on the sea bed while performing coral restoration work?
How to transfer green sea turtle safely and steadily from water to veterinary centre?
How to increase eco-friendly area in city effectively and hence to enhance the biodiversity.

Participants will have the opportunities to take part in animal conservation work. They will also gain valuable hands-on experience and become next-generation “makers”.

Eligibility

  1. Maximum of 2 teams from each school;
  2. Maximum of 3 students in each team and each student can only be in 1 team;
  3. At least 1 supervising teacher from each school; and
  4. Top 4 schools in each topic of the First Round Assessment will be selected to enter the Final Round Presentation.

 

Competition Topics

The theme of the competition is “Innovation for Conservation”.

Participants can provide design on one of the below topics.

Application and Submission

First Round Assessment
  1. Fill in the Online Application Form. Competition enrollment
  2. Prepare a Project Proposal on your respective competition topic:
    1. Project Proposal (Maximum 3 A4 pages)
      • Project proposal should be written in Traditional Chinese, Simplified Chinese or English;
      • Project Proposal written in Chinese should also include a Title in English;
      • The content of the Project Proposal must include:
        • Literature review or background research on the competition topic;
        • The objective of your design; and

        • Three conceptual designs capable of achieving the aforementioned objective.
      • Please download the“Template for Project Proposal” from the website. Please format your proposal using this template setting. Please do not change any document, paragraph, style or style name setting.
      • The finalised Project Proposal should be saved as an MS WORD document named in the format “School Name_Project Proposal Title”, and be submitted through our online submission system.

Final Round Presentation
Selected teams will be invited to implement their proposal, construct a prototype of one of the three proposed designs. They need to submit the prototype and a video by April 7, 2021 12:00pm, and present their video in the Final Round Presentation on April 11, 2021.


The maximum length of the video is 15 minutes.
The final video can be conducted in Cantonese, Mandarin or English.
Teams will need to email the text content of the videos (Traditional Chinese / Simplified Chinese / English) to steam@oceanpark.com.hk  for translation for the foreign judges.

The content of the presentation must include:
  • The reasons why you chose the current design among the three proposed designs;
  • Elaboration on the production process of the prototype;
  • Evaluations of the prototype in terms of safety, cost, durability, pros and cons, etc.; and
  • Suggestions on how to test the prototype.

There is no restriction on video format. Students may consider creative methods, such as short play, stop-motion animation, etc., to present the environmental enrichment.

Students are asked to check that there is no copyright infringement in their videos.

Prizes

A certificate of participation will be given to every attendee.

Judges will select a Champion and a First Runner-up for each competition topic.

Each team will receive:
6 Ocean Park Admission Ticket; and
HK$3,000 cash prize
Each team will receive:

HK$1,000 cash prize

Judging Criteria

First Round Assessment Final Round Presentation
The submitted Project Proposal will be judged on the content including:
  • Understanding on the topic;;
  • Relevance and suitability of the design objective; and
  • Feasibility and originality of the conceptual designs.
The final video will be judged on:
  • Relevance and accuracy;
  • Structure, which includes clarity, delivery and presentation; and
  • Creativity and aesthetic.

Project Proposals will be reviewed by members of the Organiser. Participants will be contacted via email by March 8, 2021, with the results of the review.
