As we would like to attract more students from overseas to participant in the Competition, Applicaiton deadline is updated to: March 31, 2019

Significant number of students which age do not meet the eligibility showing interest in the competition.
As this competition aims to encourage more students to apply their knowledge and skills in STEAM -related disciplines to solve real-life problems, the eligibility on age is revised to "Full time students reached 12 – 19 years of age on or before January 1, 2019".

The First Ocean Park International Conservation STEAM Competition

Ocean Park Hong Kong is proud to present the first Ocean Park International Conservation STEAM Competition. Students from all around the world are invited to submit their creative proposals on solving different environmental issues. We would like to invite you and your students to get inspired by taking part in our International STEAM Competition.
 
The competition aims to encourage students to apply their knowledge and skills in STEAM -related disciplines to solve real-life problems, especially using their creativity to propose innovative solutions for global environmental issues.

Eligibility

1. Full time students reached 12 – 19 years of age on or before January 1, 2019;
2. Maximum 5 students for each team;
3. Maximum 2 teams for each school;
4. At least one supervising teacher for each school; and
5. Top 5 schools on each topic in the First Round Assessment will be selected to enter the Final Round Presentation

Competition Topics

The theme of the competition is “STEAM and Marine Conservation”, participants can select one of the below 3 topics to join the competition:

Participants have to

STEAM action


Propose technology solutions to clean marine debris and conserve marine biodiversity.

STEAM promotion


Create art products to promote the reduction of marine debris or the conservation of biodiversity.

STEAM public awareness


Use technology (e.g. virtual reality) to raise the awareness of the general public to reduce marine debris and conserve biodiversity.

Application

First round assessment
1. Fill in the Online Application Form
2. Prepare a project proposal on one of the competition topics:
     a. Abstract (Maximum 100 words)
     b. Project proposal (Maximum 5 A4 pages)
  • Abstracts and project proposal should be written in either Chinese or English;
  • Project proposal in Chinese should include Title in English;
  • The content of the project proposal can include: literature review/ background research, conceptual design illustration, explanation of the design concept, execution plan, and expected outcomes.
  • Please download the "Template for abstracts and project proposal" from the website and format your documents. Please do not change any document, paragraph or style settings, nor style names;
  • Please save the abstracts and project proposal in MS WORD file, submit the file through the online application system;
  • A maximum of 3 minutes short video can be included in the online submission as a reference for judges.

Final round presentation

15 selected teams will be invited to implement their proposal and present their project result in the Final Round Presentation, which will be on June 20, 2019.

Each selected team have maximum 15 minutes oral presentation
The presentation can be conducted in Cantonese, Mandarin or English

Slide presentation is compulsory.

2. Product demonstration

Prizes

A participation certificate will be given to every attendee.
Judges will select a Champion and a First Runner Up on every competition topics.

To encourage more creativity from the participants, judges will select "Creative Award" on every competition topics.

Judging criteria

First round submission Final round presentation
The submitted materials will be judged on the content including:
  • Issue understanding;
  • Feasibility and originality ; and
  • Effectiveness and planning.
The presentation will be judged on:
  • Relevance and accuracy
  • Language, which includes clarity, delivery and presentation
  • Creativity and aesthetic
Students are asked to check that there is no copyright infringement in their videos.
Abstracts and project proposals will be reviewed by members of the Organiser and Co-organisers. Participants will be contacted via email by Monday, April 15, 2019 with the results of the review.
15 selected teams will be invited to execute their plan and present their project result in the Final Round Presentation, which will be on June 20, 2019.

Travel to Hong Kong and sponsorship

Competitors selected for the Final Round Presentation should be present in Hong Kong no later than June 19, 2019 (Wednesday).
Competitors who are not Hong Kong-based must arrange and pay their own round-trip airfare.  

Non Hong Kong-based competitors can apply for sponsorship to cover the travelling cost including round-trip airfare and accommodation on a reimbursement basis.
The maximum sponsorship amount to cover the traveling cost is HKD$ 50,000 per team, subject to approval by the Organising Committee.
The result of the sponsorship application will be announced together with the result of the first round submission via email by on Monday, April 15, 2019.
